The "Have nots" - people between school semesters, work schedules, stealing a few golden days (certainly not a full, contiguous week). Some on my sandlot baseball team had rented a house for a full week - I had to work out a couple of days around my work schedule in my dear Uncle's "shot & beer" bar (work helped pay for school). The "Haves" were so bored by the end of the Summer, they'd put chairs out to watch the sandlot team play wiffleball in the street. I never got to play in Yankee Stadium, but my memories of the crowds along the curbs, and our Shore adventures, are still oh-so-dear to me 50 yrs. down the Parkway.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1349128715082229990.post-49751350259154745052021-07-10T12:15:25.269-07:002021-07-10T12:15:25.269-07:00As a mother, this post definitely resonated with m...As a mother, this post definitely resonated with me. Your insight and superb writing always makes me think of something relevant in my career. Fortunately my health is good, but I have experienced many of the scenarios you so aptly describe relating to the inequalities of women in science. As a Career Development professional, I have coached many women in options to consider as the last 30+ years have been incredibly difficult for women to be successful in their scientific professional paths of their dreams. Some women chose to change career paths by identifying more "equality" in the academic route, others have found different career paths that use their scientific education. Thanks for your words of wisdom. I try to pass it on the next generation of scientists to consider the obstacles you encountered and try to figure out a way to shine! We had become ...I just discovered Chuck passed awa. We had become connected again via Facebook and having been off facebook for awhile since the fall, I looked up his page to discover he is passed. Very sad.

I knew him in the 1990s. We were both single and met on a plane, and liked travelling so we took some trips together, on our own and with his friends. I would stop in and visit him in Dallas on my way to Mexico. He was one of a kind. A bit gruff, with a big heart.

He had a gorgeous house in Dallas and had students for roommates, and somewhat forgave them when they broke his marble table while partying. He was a fabulous cook with an extraordinary collection of hot sauces. He had them on the counter, and the cleaner would put them away, and he'd put them back out again.

He had an artist friend who worked with disabled kids, who made the most beautiful tiles that he put in his windowed bathroom, and all hand painted tiles and all orchids. He had a grand piano. He was willing to go on adventures between his work commitments, and I was happy to meet him at his mom's house one time. a beautiful house and community that he often went home to.

I'll always remember him as someone who was determined, extremely intelligent, well read, broad minded, down-to-earth, savvy, kind, valued friendships, world travelled, loved science of all sorts, and definitely loves his kids and grand kids. I will miss his friendship. He was inspiring. And that is mainly because, like most of us, I've worked under some good leaders as well as some really bad managers. And it is interesting to think about why some of the people who are bad leaders ever make it into positions of authority. Think of Donald Trump, for example. While he has a lot of followers, he failed in many ways to lead this country. There are lots of reasons for that but part of it is just that he was never really a CEO of a large organizatiobn and he never had to answer to anyone else. At this point, I'm going to hit return to start a new paragraph if that is possible. If not I will continue with a new comment.

Success! So I think it takes both people skills (obviously) and really and understanding of what you are dealing with and the systems one is trying to lead. So I"m not sure if somebody who is good at heading a tech company is really going to succeed say in leading a company doing something completely different. I may be wrong but I think it helps to understand what the heck you are dealing with.

As far as people skills go, the best thing I've read is the Harvard Business Review book on "Emotional Intelligence" (link: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=734yBgAAQBAJ&gl=us&hl=en-US&source=productsearch&utm_source=HA_Desktop_US&utm_medium=SEM&utm_campaign=PLA&pcampaignid=MKT-FDR-na-us-1000189-Med-pla-bk-Evergreen-Jul1520-PLA-eBooks_Business_Economics&gclid=CjwKCAjwgOGCBhAlEiwA7FUXklrFBdeYK8FsTV-IpIimK1KYpQlqpe_3mAxwJE947kq5DHWiO1mcPRoC9dgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). This book is excellent. I also recently got a copy of the new NYT book on "Leadership" and while I haven't read it, it is based on their "Corner Office" interviews with leading CEOs and I think those columns are really good.

Good leadership obviously takes hard work but empathy, wisdom, the ability to admit mistakes, and even a bit of humility are a big help. And I think vision is really important too. One has to have an idea of where you want to take an organization and what it is you really want to accomplish.

So those are just a few thougts from me. Thanks Marilyn for your words here too. I enjoyed reading them.Jim Rhodeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13019330142740563710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1349128715082229990.post-19834205749016988472021-01-21T12:16:54.328-08:002021-01-21T12:16:54.328-08:00Excellent advice, thank you for sharing!Excellent advice, thank you for sharing!Matheus Carvalhohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02615152479059010933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1349128715082229990.post-77125668360698052652021-01-18T13:26:56.296-08:002021-01-18T13:26:56.296-08:00Cringed at #6, still fresh! I was not aware of the upheavals in his life in the last couple of years.

I was a grad student at Caltech with Chuck in the late '70s/early '80s. He ended up dropping out after an unsuccessful attempt at a thesis project to measure Si isotopes with Sam Epstein. Sam and Chuck were *not* temperamentally congruent . Always the grinning extrovert, he was infamous as a "lady's man" in grad school (at a time when male entitlement was not questioned).

I was never a potential customer for Chuck, but I always looked forward to seeing Chuck at fall AGU and catching up on gossip about our fellow "Techers". I missed the last 3 years of AGU, so had not seen Chuck in person for at least that long.

Via Facebook, it was nice to see him settle into married life and revel in his grandchildren. He was unfailingly helpful in my failed efforts to get a mass spec when I was an assistant prof. But even when it became clear that it wasn't going to happen, he came to every one of my presentations at conferences where we overlapped and told me all sorts of gossip that I really needed to know to be able to navigate the field. I organised a small international conference called "Hydrogen isotopes as recorders of environment" in France in 2011. Damn if Chuck didn't catch wind of it and invite himself. He landed in CDG airport at around 2 AM, rented a car and got briefly stuck at a toll booth because he had no euros and his USA credit cards wouldn't work. No problem. He just blew through with the next car. I hope he sold some mass specs. What a pal! V Terwilligerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00374568824143512357noreply@blogger.com
